PROOF TO THE CONTRARY
"Daniel Families of the Southern States" by Charles Brunk Heineman, 1934
Mr Heineman is a descendant of Capt. William Daniel, the progenitor of the Midlesex County line of Daniel's.
In his book it lists this William Daniel as descended from John Daniel of York County, Virginia.
He also comments on how this William Daniel was mistaken into the Middlesex County Daniel's.
William Daniel is credited as son of James and Margaret Vivian for these reasons: First, While the vestry book of Middlesex Par. gives seven children of James, there is a gap of eight years between his sons Charles and James into which William from his supposed age could legitimately be placed. Second, the vestry book is in such a dilapidated condition that it is difficult to decipher all it's records, and the entire family of James may not have been discovered. Third, Maj. J.W. Daniel states that when a boy he "called with his father on Mr. Justice P.V. Daniel in Washington, soon after his wife was burnt, and well remembers that they each greeted the other as a kinsman." Mrs. W.P. Conway states (1880) that Judge Wm. Daniel, Sr., the father of Judge Wm. D., Jr., was a near kinsman of her grandfather, Travers Daniel, 1741-1826, and that he attended dinners in Richmond given by Mr.s Gov. Wood and Mrs. Col. Hay, the sister of Judge P.V. Daniel. Mrs. Hay wrote of him as presented on such an occasion that "he wore Virginia pressed cloth and although there were many who wore English broadcloth he looked, as was, the grandest gentleman at the dinner."
