William was son and heir of Ralph Fitz William. Ralph Fitz William was the son of William Fitz Ralph, who died before 26 Aug 1218 [Fine Roll, 2 Hen., III, m.3]. This William Fitz Ralph was the son of Ralph Fitz Ralph, of Grimthorpe, who was living 1 Dec 1189 [Inspeximus of royal charter in Patent Roll, 16 Ric. II, p.2, m.21] Ralph Fitz Ralph, who left a widow, Emma [Rot, Curie Regis, vol. i, p.145], was son and heir of Ralph fitz William who was living in 1130 [Pipe Roll, 31 Hen I, Yorkshire]. This Ralph Fitz William was the son and heir of William Fitz Ulf [Cartulary of Hexham, in Coll. Top. et Gen., vol. vi, nos. 11, 12,13 &c.].
