STRONG CITY --- William "Bill" Garr, 84, Strong City, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at a Council Grove hospital.

Mr. Garr farmed and worked for REA. He was part of the crew that built the REA lines from south-central Kansas through Chase, Marion and Morris counties. He worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation from 1951 until he retired in 1983.

He was born Dec. 5, 1917, near Delevan, the son of Erman Thomas and Martha Elinor McKinney Garr.

He married Charlene Strom on Aug. 13, 1938, in Council Grove. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Edward William Garr, Cottonwood Falls, and Dallas Lee Garr, rural Emporia; three daughters, Carol Jean Fillmore, Strong City, and Betsy Ann Heathman and Patsy Sue Potter, both of Gardner; a sister, Dorothy Rohloff, Council Grove; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Garr was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd Richard Garr.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Cottonwood Falls. Burial will be in Strong City Cemetery. Mrs. Garr will lie in state at the church after 11 a.m. today.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church in Cottonwood Falls and sent in care of Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home in Cottonwood Falls.
