About William Godfrey, King of the Nottoway
Biography
Siging his mark with a large W: William Godfrey, King of the Nottoway Old Cheraw (Recorded by Laderer in 1668 as in his 13 Eastern Siouan's log) a year after this person signed the Treat of Middle Plantation. *Not the same as Cheroenhaka of the 2 Towns of "Nottoway Tributary Indians". This was Kateras/Hateras married to Dan River group, living on the Nottoway after the Coropeake residence, listed in the line of "Chief of Churrah". This William Godfrey was from the Valley of the Xualla family since times of DeSoto Chroniclers denotation of their first meeting them 30 leagues north of what is today Lake Borgne; MS, current DeSoto Nat. Forest. This group was tied to port captains, all port, surely from times of old not exactly by choice; this profiled person was born either in Chalmette, La or in in Va but had connections to both places, born circa 1620 likely in Va, Jarratt, Sussex County (per archeaology of NPS) and Signed the Middle Plantation Treaty of 1677.
William married Oseopeake (Moore) Godfrey. Together they had the following children: Ann Shoemaker / Williams, of Chalmette, La.
He was buried in Coropeake Va, Corapeake, Gates County, North Carolina, United States.
