William along with brother John and Alexander came to America in 1696 because their father, James Johnston had no property. He was the youngest in his family so possessed nothing of the family's estate -- Caskieben. Earliest recorded ancestor: Stephen de Johnston (or Johnestoun) married Margaret of Caskieben in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Ancestor William Johnston married Margaret of Fife and "fell on the field of Flodden" in 1513. Ancestor Willam Johnston married Margaret Hay and "fell on the field of Pinkie" in 1547. George Johnston married Christine Forbes and became a Quaker.
William was likely a Quaker when he came to America and likely settle in Virginia because he married Sarah Massie of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County Virginia.
Sarah Penelope Massie was born abt. 1680. She was the daughter of Peter Massie . Sarah Massie married William Johnson and had these children:
Sarah passed away on the 28th of October 1711, according to St. Peter's Register, may have been caused by the complication of Child Birth. Her last daughter Cicely was bapised by her father, William Johnson on the 3rd of December 1711.
