William Noyes, of Urchfont

This family, which is of Norman descent, and originally bore the name of Noye (according to the concurrent tradition of its different branches), was settled at an early period in Wilts and Hants, where it was possessed of considerable estates in the 16th century.

In 1540, William Noyes purchased the prebend of Archesfount (how Urchfont), with its dependencies, fromthe Earl of Hertford--afterwards the Protector Somerset. He died in 1557, leaving by Agnes, his wife, five daughters - Edith; Eliza; Agnes; Joan; Alice; and four sons - Robert; John, who M.P. for Calne in 1600; Richard, who was of Manningford and d.sp. in 1600; William, also of Manningford, and d. 1596. The Eldest son,

Robert Noyes, who succeeded tothe prebend and estates of Erchfont, m Joan Attridge, and dying at a great age in 1614, left by his will, proved in that year, his estates at Archesfounte to his second son, William, having previously settled his eldest son, Robert, on the estate of Hatherdean, near Andover, which he purchased in 1574. This

Robert Noyes, of Hatherdean, d in 1636, and ws buried in Andover chancel, leaving a numerous family, and making Peter Noyes, of Andover, his executor. His brother William Noyes, Esq. of Archesfounte, d 27 October 1618, leaving his wife, Anne, daughter of Michael Erneley, Esq. (high sheriff of Wilts in 1580) who m 2ndly, Robert Eyre, Esq. of Chaldfield House, three sons,

• Robert of Chadfield d 1637
• Richard of Chaldfield d 1636

and three daughters. He also made his cousin, Peter Noyes, the elder, of Andover, his executor. This Peter Noyes had m in 1589, Agnes, Daughter and co-heir of John Noyes, of Trunkwell House, Shinfield, co. Berks, by whom he had,

• Peter, of Trunkwell, who m in 1621, Eleanor, daughter of Andrian Kirby, of Basing, and d. in 1644, .v.p., leaving two sons, Peter, who ...his grandfather; and John of of Strathfieldsaye, who d. s.p. 1668, and was buried at Shinfield.
• Richard, who m. and left issue
• Joyce, who married the Rev. Robert Wylde,D.D.
• Catherine.

Peter Noyes, the elder, d 1647, and was s. by his grandson,

Peter Noyes, of Trunkwell, who entered his pedigree on the Visitation of Berks. He m. 1653, Winifred, daughter of John White, Esq. of the Inner Temple, 2nd son of Martin White, Esq. of Fittleford, co. Dorset, and dying in 1666, was buried at Shinfield, leaving his wife, Winifred (who died in 1679) four sons and three daughters.
