About William Tanfield, of Everton, Esq.

Biography

Retrieved from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tanfield-4 on 23 April 2024 and then edited; addition to existing profile.

Birth

William Tanfield was the only known son, and the heir of Robert Tanfield (d. 1505) by his second wife Katherine Neville (daughter of Edward). He was born about 1488: he was said to be 16 in the 1504 Inquisition for his paternal grandmother Elizabeth Brooke,[2] of age in 1509, and 37 in 1525.[3][4] He may have been born at Gayton, Northamptonshire where his father had his main residence, but his father also had lands in Somerset and elsewhere.

Lands

William held lands in Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Devon, Huntingdonshire, Somerset and London.[3][4][9]

In 1503, when he was 15, he inherited the manors of Everton, Potton and Arlesey, Bedfordshire from his grandmother Elizbaeth (Brooke) Tanfield.[10][11][12]

He was styled as William Tanfield of Everton, co.Hunts, Esq., 1 son, on the Visitation of Northamptonshire, 1618-19.

Death

William died on 6 April 1529. His will was proved on 5 April 1529.[3][4] Inquisitions Post Mortem were held in 21 Henry VIII (22 April 1529 - 21 April 1530).[9]

Family

William married Isabel/Elizabeth Staveley, daughter of William Staveley[1] of Buckinghamshire and his wife, who was a daughter of Francis Esse.[3][4] (Isabel and Elizabeth could in this period be alternative versions of the same first name.) Their son Francis was said to be 17 in 1529 when William died, pointing to a birth year of about 1512:[3][4] with that in mind, their marriage date has been estimated as about 1510. They had the following children:

Children listed in Visitations of Northamptonshire:

  • William Tanfield of Harpole, Co. Northampton, 4th son (m. Elizabeth, daughter and coheir of Thomas Clovile of Cloptfold Hall, Co. Essex)
  • Robert Tanfield, 3rd son (m. the daughter of Fitzharbert)
  • Humfrey Tanfield, eldest son, died young, s.p.
  • Francis Tanfield, 2nd son and heir (m. Bridgett, daughter of Richard Cave and sister to Sir Ambrose Cave, Kt.)
  • Elizabeth Tanfield (m. John Ashby of Losbey, Co. Leic.)
  • Ursula Tanfield (m. William Purcell of Gayton, Northamptonshire)
  • Agnes Tanfield (m. Peter Molle) is shown in other sources.

His wife survived him, and in 1531 married Richard Humphrey.[3][4][13] She is named as Isabel Humphrey in the January 1557/8 will of her son Francis Tanfield.[6][7]

Previously-shown Daughter

Catharine Gylbert has previously been shown on WikitTree as a daughter of William Tanfield and Isabel/Elizabeth Staveley. The source given was Gary Boyd Roberts' The Royal Descents of 500 Immigrants. Gary Boyd Roberts' later The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants has no daughter called Catherine Tanfield.[14]

Catherine's profile lacks any good sourcing (as at 20 November 2023), and she is attributed a son born before she was.

Notable descendants
