Tazewell County, Virginia Survey Book 1 (1801-1824).

Surveyed for Wm Wynne 309 acres of land agreeable to an order from the worshipfull Court of Tazewell County permitting him to include his several claims adjoining in one survey which said survey includes 209 acres conveyed to him by Wm. Hall by a Deed of Bargain and Sale bearing date January 15, 1803, it being part of a Grant of 500 acres patented to Wm. Hall April 20, 1801 and 100 acres by virtue of an entry made Dec 25, 1801 on part of a Land Office Treasury Warrant assigned to him by Hez. Harman assigned of Wm. Preston assignee of Jas. Edmondson No. 17192 and dated [no date given]. Located in Burkes Garden and joining lines with James Thompson and Wm. Hall and Garden Mountain. Aug 19, 1803

Tazewell County Land Tax for the Year 1806 shows William Wynne was taxed on 282 and 309 acres, the latter of which corresponds to the Aug 19, 1803 entry in the Tazewell County Survey Book 1. The record also shows the 282 acres was located near “Head Clinch” 2 miles East of the county courthouse, and the 309 acres near “Burks Garden” 12 miles Southeast of the county courthouse. William Wynne’s will reads as follows: Made 11 May 1808. Proven 26 Jul 1808. Will. Weak in body. Wife, Phillis, the plantation I now live on. Heirs of Ruth Washham(?), deceased, and to Orphy Edward, my two oldest daughters, $1.00 each. To Sally Jane, my third daughter, £10. To son, John Wynne and Hugh Currin all right to piece of land called the Vallentine plantation, whereon Henry Harmon now lives. Should they gain said land they are to repay to me or my heirs all costs heretofore expended on the same that of Clarks nots. To five sons: William, Josiah, Elkanah, Oliver, and Harman, sons of my first wife, £20 each. Sons: John and William, sons of present wife, the tract of land I now live on. The 666 acres of land lying in Powels Valley I give and bequeath to my sons, Samuel, Robert, Harry, Peter and James—to be divided equally among them. My land lying in Burks Garden I bequeath to my son, Miner. Seven youngest sons: Samuel, Robert, Henry, Peter, William, James and Miner. Daughters: Mary, Pheby, Margaret, Elizabeth, Martha, Anna and Nancy. Youngest to be furnished with same that the three that are already married (Mary, Pheby and Margaret). Executors: Wife; son, Josiah; and Christopher Marr. Witnesses: Henry Marrs, Thomas Burriss, William Wynne, Jr., Robert Wynne, Sr.

On Sep 27, 1808 (2 months after his death) William was “appraised” for Negros: Bob, Hall, Jean. Many other items. $2603.29 + $777.00.

William Wynne, married first Mary Cynthia Harmon (1835-1776) in 1752 in Halifax Co, VA. They had sixteen children: Peter E. (1753-1818); Orpha (1757-1808); Orphry Edward (1757-?); Anna (1758-1759); John (1760-1815); Irysby Edward (1761-1762); William III (1762-1835); Salbie Jane (1763-1764); Josiah S. (1765-1813); Mary (1767-1848); Elkanah (1767-1833); Oliver (1769-1858); Harmon (1772-1851); Jonah (1773-?); Sarah Jane (1776-1870); Ruth (1808-?).

William Wynne. married second Phillis Marrs (1763-1855) on 21 Jan 1782 in Montgomery Co, VA. They, too, had sixteen children: John H, (1783-1865); Mary "Polly" (1784-1816); Margaret "Peggy" (1786-1816); Elizabeth (1787-1817); Phoebe (1788-1814); Samuel (1789-1817); Robert (1788-1818); Thomas (1792-1796); Henry "Harry" (1793-1816); Martha (1794-1853); Anne (1795-1817); Peter (1797-1832); William IV (1798-1819); James (1800-1868); Nancy Anne (1802-1821); Minor (1803-1880).

Many of William's children died young In the second decade f the nineteenth century, some supposedly from tuberculosis.

Three of the sons of William Wynne, Jr., and Phillis Marrs---John, James, and Minor---married daughters of William Peery---Olivia, Sophia, and Emily respectively.

Some say William Wynne, Jr. married a third time but there seems to be no evidence of a third marriage.

Capt. William Wynne, Jr., was a farmer.

Capt. William Wynne, Jr.'s will and probate documents (26 Jul 1808) are in Tazewell Co, VA, Will Book No. 1, pages 42-49. In his will, William devises property to his wife, Phillis,; to his daughters Ruth Washburn, Orphey Edward, Sally Janes; to his son John WYnne, and to Hugh Currin; to his sons of his first wife, viz.: William, Josiah, Elkanah, Oliver, and Harmon; to his sons Samuel, Robert, Harry, Peter, Miner, children of his second wife; to his daughters Mary, Pheby, Margaret, Elizabeth, Martha, Anna, and Nancy. (Tazewell Co, Will Book No. 1, page 42, in Harman, Annals of Tazewell Co, II, 272).

POD also given as Locust Hill, Middlesex Co, VA. (There is also a Locust Hill in Wythe Co, VA.) However, the Locust Hill in question is the site in present-day Tazewell, VA, where Capt. WIlliam Wynne, Jr., built a fort ca. 1773-1774 to protect his family from marauding Indians. Wynn’s Fort was located at Locust Hill on the North fork of Clinch River, about one and a half miles from the present town of Tazewell, VA, and was probably erected in 1774. He died there but was buried in the Wynne-Peery Cemetery in Tazewell, Tazewell Co, VA. (Harman, Annals of Tazewell County, II, 525).

Residence Settled at Locust Hill, 1 1/2 miles east of the town of Tazewell and built a fort there.
