William 'the elder' Carpenter, of Marden

There is no evidence of the names of William's parents, but it is likely that he was born in Wiltshire, England.

From his will[1] we know that he had a wife, Elizabeth and at least six children:

1. Robert
2. John
3. Richard
4. William
5. Alice
6. Maude

William left a will dated 21 December 1586 describing himself as William Carpenter the elder of Marden, Wiltshire and requesting burial in the churchyard at Marden.[1] He made bequests to and mentioned:

• the cathedral church of Sarum
• the parish church of Marden
• my wife Elizabeth
• Robert, the eldest son of William Carpenter
• my son John
• my son Richard
• my son William
• William Darke
• each of my sons and daughters children
• my daughter Alice Darke
• my daughter Maude Jennings
• my son Robert, residual legatee and sole executor

Notes

William was born in the year 1510 in Malden, Wiltshire, England. He married Elizabeth and together they had 9 children. Richard, William, John, Richard, Maude, Alice, Maud, Dyke & Welling. He died in 1587 in Malden, Wiltshire, England.

Text: Record for Robert CARPENTER "...was born about 1520 (or was it 1505?). Died in 1550. Had several children, including James, Alexander, William and Richard. James' descendants continued the English line of Tyronnel Carpenters; Alexander's daughters emigrated to America; William's descendants made up the American Rehoboth line; and Richard's the American Providence line. [3]

It appears that all the family were Dissenters, and obliged to leave London. Alexander went to Leiden, Holland. WILLIAM, came to America in 1638. Another son, James, was heir to his father's estate. [3]
