About (unknown first wife) Libby
John Libby was married about 1634 to his first wife. This marriage likely took place in England but may have taken place at Richmond Island, Maine, following John's arrival in New England. Unfortunately, no evidence of her given name has ever been found. By tradition, however, she was the mother of John Libby's 12 oldest children, starting with John Libby Jr. (1637) and ending with Rebecca (Libby) Slaughter (c1661). According to family history captured by historian Samuel Fogg (1716-1798) -- the grandson of Hannah (Libby) Fogg (b. 1660) -- Hannah and her next-oldest brother David Libby (b. 1658), were half-siblings to Matthew Libby (b. 1663) and Daniel Libby (b. 1666).
Please note: any reference to John Libby's first wife as "Judith" is erroneous. The husband of Judith Libby was a different -- but contemporaneous -- John Libby who remained in England. He was married to Judith [maiden name not given] in Lanlivery Rural, Cornwall, England on 27 Apr 1635. They lived in nearby Saint Sampson, Cornwall, and had three known children: Dorothy Libby (bapt Saint Sampson, 7 Feb 1641/42), Maria Libby (bapt Saint Sampson, 1 June 1645), and Thomas Libby (bapt Saint Sampson, 2 Dec 1647).
As these children were being born in England at the same time as John Libby of Scarborough, ME was fathering children in New England, this is solid proof that Judith was not John of Maine's unknown first wife.
Additional note: from names given to Libby granddaughters, it is possible -- but completely unproven -- that John Libby's first wife's name may have been Mary. If so, that would mean that both the first wife and the second wife of John Libby bore the same name.
