Not too sure about this but I think the Captain of HMNZS Tamaki (Moetihi Island in Hauraki Gulf) carried the surname of BARDEN (S), in 1960 (May) to 1961 (May). That was the time I spent there as a Seaman Boy.
Also, my Austin POWER, who was born on the 12 March 1818 in Plymouth, England and died on the 9 October 1872 in Dunedin, NZ married Harriet BARDEN(S) .... just checked their Certificate ..... BARDENS. It was the Parish of Charles Martyr in Devon England, number 58, on the 26 March 1844 (Austin's mother's birthday ..... Elizabeth FISHER (26 March 1786 .... Appledore, North Devon) .... Both are said to be of Full Age, Austin, a Mariner living in Tavistock Street, whilst Harriet lived in Jubilee Street. His father was Mathew Power, a Mariner ....hmmmm .... that would suggest he is still alive then ...having trouble finding him since his Mariner ticket of the 9 April 1836 whilst on the ship, Diligent Farmer, (Mathew became a Master Mariner in 1811) . The Marriage was by Banns and one of the witnesses, Edward FOOTS is family married to Harriet's sister. Do not know the other witness, James SHORT. Harriet's father was William Bardens, a Labourer. Austin became a Master Mariner in 1847 whilst the Mate on his little brother's ship, Richard and Ann. Thomas was a Master Mariner since 1844. Children were Justina Mary (1845... Plymouth), Austin William Bardens (1847 ... Plymouth), Alfred Mathew Edward Manning (1850 ... London) ...Manning was another sister to Harriet. Charles Blyth and Francis Foot (1853 .... Plymouth). Twins! The Birth actually says Blight instead of Blyth but i just changed it to indicate that Austin's elder sister, Eliza, married Charles Nicholas BLYTH in 1851 before they moved to Middlesex. Ha ... the Curator was John Street.
In the 1851 Census we have Austin down as the Publican of the Crown Tavern in Middlesex (London?) with Harriet, and Alfred being one year old. Austin Junior is down Middlesex Road staying the night? with his three aunties BARDENS, MANNING, and FOOT. No sign of Justina but she later claimed to have been in the Bendigo Gold Fields at the time. The family left for Melbourne, Australia on the ship, Fitzjames, in 1854, including Justina. . On the 7 July 1854 Charles was committed to the deep, having died of ???? Upon arrival in Melbourne on the 7 September 1854 the family headed up to the Bendigo Gold Fields. Francis died the next year (1855) whilst being baby sat by Justina. Harriet had gone next door to visit the neighbour and Justina had taken Francis down to the creek where he fell in, under the water, and when she got him back home (they lived in a tent) Harriet tried to get the Doctor to visit to check him out, but the Doctor was at a party and did not come. Harriet then contacted the Vet to come and he did so but to no avail. Francis died the following day. In 1856 Harriet died and both she and Francis are buried in the White Hills Cemetery in Bendigo. I went looking but never found their Plot(s) as vandals have pulled all the number stakes out and when I looked they were laid in large piles around the cemetery. I was given a page that stated that Francis was buried on the 28 November 1855 age 2; from the Bendigo Flats area; and Harriet was buried on the 3 July 1856 aged 31, with her place of death being Bridge Street. White Hills Cemetery was also known as Junction Cemetery. Due to loss of trecords the exact location is not known (in their records anyway), it might also be worth readin gother general Goldfields history too (they then said ...there are lots). http://www.bencemtrust.com.au Hope this helps.
