- Chaim Freedman Eliyahu's Branches page 181: "The Bardin family is reputed to have originated in France or Italy where members were engaged in silk trade. This was also their occupation in eastern Europe. The form of the name 'Bardin' is indicative of a surname derived from an abbreviation of a Hebrew name beginning 'ben Red D.' or 'ben Rav Din'. If the latter form is correct, it indicates descent from a rabbi who held a position on the Beit Din. Another possibility is that the name Bardin may also be geographic in origin."
