ii Gijbert Theuniszn Boogaertman b. Heykoop, Holland. Talcott states that Cornelius (13731) was the father of Gijsbert (13893). The LDS-AF states same, Louens, Cornelius and Guysbert were born to Cornelius Tuenis and Beeltje

. The dates of birth seem to support this, with their dates of birth between 1635 and 1640.

4. iii Cornelius Theunis b. ca 1609.

Fourth Generation

5. Jan Laurens Boogaertman b. ca 1625, Holland, occupation Farmer, m. in New
York, Cornelia Everts, b. ca 1629, Holland. Jan died ca 1707. He came to America on the "Bridled Cow" on 16 April 1663. He settled in Brooklyn, New York in 1663. According to Talcott, Jan was the son of Louens Cornelisen Bogaert. He later moved to Harlem. Jan Laurens Bougaert grew up at Schoondrewoerd (a word meaning finer words), a small fortified village noted for its salmon fisheries. It is on a branch of the Maas River twenty miles above Rotterdam about two miles from Heykoop, the former home of his uncle Gysbert. Jan was reared a farmer, but early in life struck out for himself. Reaching manhood, he married Cornelia Evertse, the daughter of a well-to-do neighbor, and settled down to farming in his native town. In common with thousands of Hollanders he seems to have caught the prevalent emigration fever for, on 16 April 1663, we find him, his wife, two children and many of his neighbors leaving Amsterdam on the Dutch West India ship "Spotted Cow," bound for America. A month later the craft touched the warf at New Amsterdam, where some of the cargo of emigrants remained and others went to Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Albany. Jan continued on to the vicinity of Bedford, Brooklyn, where he bought a farm, and remained there until 1671. In the spring of that year he had an opportunity, of which he availed himself, to take charge of the farm of Dr. John de la Montagne near Harlem. On 1 May 1672, he moved from Bedford, and for a period of twenty years was an active participant in the civil and religious affairs of Harlem. That he prospered is evidenced by the fact that in 1679, 1691, and 1701 he bought lands at Hoorns Hook, Spuyten Duyvil, and Hellegat Sound. He was chosen magistrate of Harlem in 1675 and 1676, but failed afterward in the realization of any other political aspirations. In 1695 he sold his lands at Bedford and in 1706 his farm lands in Harlem. The following Spring, stricken in years, he and his wife moved to New Amsterdam (joining the Dutch Church there on 27 May 1797), where they died soon after at a ripe old age. [HARV1900, pp. 58-59; BOGA1959, pp. 32-33, 104; RIKE1904, pp. 98, 274, 447-448; and TALC1973, pp. 29].

6. Cornelius Laurens Boogaertman b. Holland, m. Lijsken Cornelise, d. bef 1678, Holland. Cornelius died bef 1678, Holland. He lived on the Diefijk, near Schoonrewooerd, and died before 1678.

i Floris Corneliszn Bogaert occupation farmer. Lived in Overheykoop and was a properous and influential farmer.

ii Jan Corneliszn Bogaert d. 1689, Holland.

7. Gijsbert Corneliszn Boogaertman b. Schoonrewoerd, Holland, occupation Farmer, m. (1) Aertjien Bastiaens, d. 10-Dec-1646, m. (2) 1663, Mary

. Gijsbert died 1684. He was in New Amsterdam, America in 1640, and leased part of a plantation from Jacob Van Corlaer on Manhatten Island. He was a widower with children that he took to America from Holland. He moved to Catskill, New York in 1661. He remarried in 1663. Adams source states that his first 3 children remained in Holland, and that Gijsbert was the son of Teunis (13729) not Cornelius (13731) as Talcott states. Gijsbert Corneliszn Bogaert born Schoonrewoerd, Holland, occupation Farmer, died 1684-1695. Gijsbert was, according to Talcott, in New Netherland in 1640, but this claim is disputed in John Bogart's Genealogy of the Bogart Family. Talcott also claims that Gijsbert's cousin Teunis (the son of his uncle, Gijsbert Theuniszn Bogaert) was Gijsbert's own son. [TALC1973, pp. 24] Bogart's Genealogy clearly shows the relationship among the four pioneer members of the Bogaert family descended from Gijsbert In den Boogaertmen based on additional records discovered in Holland. [BOGA1959, pp. 16-26] Gijsbert settled in Catskill, NY. He gave his homestead and farm at Catshill to his stepson, the son of his wife Jochems (Mary). His stepson, Helmer Jants, petitioned for the land 9 Feb 1698-9 and obtained it in 1703. This petition "Showeth that his step-father, Guysbert Bogaert, and Jochems, his mother, owned lands on the north side of Catskill creek for about twenty years last past - lands which they afterward, on June 20, 1684 purchased of the Indians, as doth appear from deed in full recorded in Albany." [TALC1973, pp. 25] Mary: A petition for a patent in 1698/9 by Helmer Jants states his "step-father" Gijsbert (13893) and Jochems, his mother. Helmer died without heirs, according to Talcott. Thus, Mary was likely married to a Jants before Kalder.

ii Abraham Boogaertman b. Holland. Married and lived in Holland

iii Aalkien Boogaertman b. Holland, m. Cornelius Stevens.

vi Johannes Bogaert. Although not listed by Adams, Talcott states Johannes was a son, and lived in Jamaica, Long Island.

vii Joris Bogaert. Listed by Talcott as a son, but not Adams. Talcott states he represented Brooklyn in Convention in 1664.

8. Cornelius Corneliszn Bogaert b. ca 1637, Schoonrewoerd, Vianen, Holland, m. Dirkje Unknown. Cornelius buried: 28-Jul-1665, Albany, New York. Cornelius Bogart Baptized 12 Sep 1761, Six Mile RDC, m. 27 AUG 1793, in Washington County, Tennessee, Elizabeth Moffett, b. 24-Aug-1773. Cornelius died November 1809. Around 1765 Noah RANGE and his wife Elizabeth COONS/COENS/KONES and their family left their home in Somerset County, NJ, and migrated to York (now Adams) County, PA. Among the group were their daughters Catherine and Elizabeth who had married, respectively, Samuel BOGART and his nephew Henry BOGART. Within a few years some of the group, including both BOGART families, moved to Berkeley County, VA (now WV) and from there to East Tennessee around 1779. The father of Samuel BOGART (and grandfather of Henry BOGART) was Cornelius BOGAERT, whose family has been traced back to Dutch New York and before that to Holland (first known born 1540). Humphrey BOGART is descended from this family. There was at least one Cornelius in nearly every generation. Samuel BOGART's mother, Cornelia DELAMATER, also had a brother Cornelius, so the name is very well established in the family. According to my information, Samuel BOGART and Catherine RANGE had ten children, among whom was Cornelius BOGART, born circa 1771/1773, who died 1809. This could be the Cornelius who married Elizabeth MOFFETT in 1793, but it is also quite possible that Henry BOGART and Elizabeth RANGE had a son Cornelius. I don't have a list of their children, but I have corresponded with someone who is working on this branch of the family. - Lissa Soergel, 504 N.
