'Pant' is an important surname of people from Kumaun region of the Uttarakhand State in India. The founder of the clan, since the time the history of the tree is clearly traceable, was Jai Deva Pant who alongwith his brother-in-law Dinakar Rao Pant migrated to Utarakhand hills from Ratnagiri area of Western Ghats of Maharashtra State in western India. It was in the year 1303 AD. At present members of Pant clan are spread almost all over India and abroad but their biggest concentration is in Kumaun area of Uttarakhand, including in Pantnagar.
