Familia Rojas
It deserves to be included this lineage, and in fact it is, between the oldest and nobles of Spain.
Its primitive solar settled in the place of Rojas, of whose name the surname was derived. That place (today villa) belongs to the judicial party of Briviesca and province of Burgos, called thus by the reddish color of its lands. However, in other cases, it could be a feminine plural form of "red" - a woman's nickname with reddish hair. It is quite common surname and it is distributed by Spain, although it registers, mainly, in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Málaga, Cadiz, Cordoba, Toledo, etc.
Later the Reds went to the conquest of Extremadura, Murcia and Andalusia, where they erected new houses, proving their hidalguía before the Real Chancillería of Granada.

In Spain. The surnames of origin toponym as Rojas are of Jewish origin, J.M.Lacalle, in the Spanish Jews (publisher Sayma, Barcelona 1961), tells us famous names sefarditas (Spanish Jews) take names of the Spanish geography. It is known that at the time of the conversions of Jews to Christianity, these used to adopt surnames of topónimo origin for a whole family.
