Saldanha Genealogy and Saldanha Family History Information

Saldaña is of Spanish origin (there already being a Count of Saldaña in the year 870), but a branch of this noble family came to Portugal in the late 15th century, and spread from there. The spelling of the name in Portuguese is Saldanha. Many of teh Saldanha family were active in Portuguese India. For exmaple, João Saldanha, who died in 1596, was a Knight Commander of the Order of Christ and Captain General of the Indian fleet in the Portuguese navy.
