Introduction

Origins
The name was first seen in Pembrokeshire in southwest Wales and part of the Welsh kingdom of Deheubarth in ancient times. There, the family descends from Gualgnain or Gwalwynne, the son of King Arthur's sister. The surname traces its roots all the way back to a Geoffry Wawein in Normandy in 1198. The Domesday Book has the name Walduinus listed in Staffordshire and later in 1205, Welwin is found in Essex.
Spelling Variations
Welsh surnames such as the surname Walling did not come into use until the Middle Ages when scribes and clergy recorded surnames as they sounded when they were told to them. This often resulted in various spellings of one common name, resulting in the Walling surname's variants of Walwyn, Wallwyn, Wallin, Walwin, and more.
