The Weinberg name appears among Jews of East Europe in various locations. It is from the German word for vineyard. In the 18th and 19th century, government clerks began assigning family names to Jews ( and others), often based on occupation, location, or prestige. The Weinberg family of Dolyna, Ukraine( Dolina, Galicia) were prominent since the beginnings of Jewish settlement in Dolyna in the 17th century, and gained the name Weinberg.
