William Pannell, of St. Mary's Parish looks a lot like William Pannell, of St. Mary's Parish with wrong dates and some wrong children. The parents match and so does the wife.

The children are seen at an unsourced site:

http://sites.rootsweb.com/~pinnell/html/fam00425.htm

I think I should merge them and set adrift these Pinion / Pinnell children, as per:

https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/p/i/n/Donald-M-Pinnell/GENE1-0001.html

Notes for JONATHAN PINNELL:

Jonathan often used the surname PENNELL, or PINNION.The reason for this is unknown, although his brothers Lewis and Peter, and Jonathan's son Richard also frequently used variations of the surname. This has made it more difficult to identify Jonathan's parents.

It's they who have been causing the confusion.

So, there will be a new "unknown" Pinion / Pennell as father of brothers:

  1. Jonathan Pinnell
  2. Lewis Pinnell
  3. Peter Pinnell, Sr.

of South Carolina.

Is it possible though that these 3 sons who ended up in South Carolina actually from Sarah Bagly / Bayley and William Pannell / Pinnell?

History of the Pinnell-Royal Families" by Royall E Pinnell (~1968) < image > - can we get to the next pages? They list 9 children and not the 6 listed at https://colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I28485&tr... (which includes the will and probate).

Or - was it formerly listed and no longer valid?

This site https://sites.rootsweb.com/~pinnell/html/fam00425.htm seems close -- or was it a different Pinnell?

Made a new profile: William Pinnell, of Catawba

Not the same as William Pannell, of St. Mary's Parish

Heavens, his facsimily (photocopy) signature in his own hand is "Peter Pinnell" on his Revolutionary War pension application which also describes his residence as Missouri and his service state as South Carolina.. Please don't do that.

Also I've been looking to prove Peter Pinnell's parentage, which is initially leading me to a "Thomas Pinnell" in South Carolina. But I'm not done with my research yet. I would like to stick to primary or no less than secondary sources with my ancestry.

My Pinnells, according to family sources, were French Huguenots who had settled in South Carolina, where Peter was born.

Your William Pannill and his wife were born and died in Virginia!

In the biography provided by Ethan Allen Pinnell ("E.A.") Peter Pinnell's parents are NOT named.

In DAR records he's "Peter Pinnell". Changing it to Pinion is confusing. "Pinion" can be listed among his aka (nicknames).

Does he have the brothers Jonathan Pinnell & Lewis Pinnell

How do you want to handle the sourcing from

  1. This man? https://sites.rootsweb.com/~pinnell/html/fam00425.htm (Only Peter Pinnell b. 1755 matches)

No. That's the William Pannill I detached him from.

Here the entire estate of Wiliam Pannell was left to his wife and son William. The entire line for the two Williams is located in VIRGINIA. There is no connection with that family to Peter Pinnell born in SOUTH CAROLINA.

Btw, Ethan Allen Pinnell, an attorney and probate judge whose bio is included in United States Biographical Dictionary of Eminent and Self-Made Men (Missouri Volume) was the son of Wesley Pinnell and grandson of Peter Pinnell. Nowhere in any of these Missouri family biographies have I seen any mention of Peter Pinnell's parents, other than their ethnicity and South Carolina origins.

In researching SC records I ran across a Thomas Pinnell but was unable to progress due to a glitch in Family Search which wouldn't allow the page with his will to open for me. I haven't even had time to try again, yet.

As seen here, there is NO "Peter Pinnell" in that Virginia lineage:

Okay, I see what you mean. However that bit about a William Pannell from Virginia moving to first NC and then SC appears to be hearsay only. Not saying it didn't happen, but we need proof.

You're confusing the William Pannell / Pannill I detached Peter Pinnell from with the brand new, source based William Pinnell of Catawba. They are not meant to be the same person.

You can argue with the source and detach if you like, but they are not a confusion on my part.

Not saying it didn't happen, but we need proof.

That's all up to you. I've done my part.

I saw that. But I also read Ethan Allen Pinnell's own biography of his family, and nowhere in it did he name his grandfather, Peter Pinnell's parents.

I already provided links to the family bios, yesterday. I already read them.

But didn't you link as Peter's father a William who moved to NC in 1698?

Peter was born in 1755, so William was likely his grandfather, not father.

Re: Jonathan Pinnell. He and Peter Pinnell co-witnessed a 1785 will for John Mackgarnthe (aka MacGunty) in 96 District, SC. (96 district was a large Indian Territory later subdivided into 6-7 smaller counties).

But didn't you link as Peter's father a William who moved to NC in 1698?

No, I did not. I detached the William described at https://colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I28485&tr... from Peter, and started a new William Pinnell, who supposedly moved down the Catawba.

Clearly he is not Culpeper William Pannell. Nor do I understand why William Parnell of South Carolina was named a Jr. by the source.

The children of William Pannell, of St. Mary's Parish are listed in his profile. No South Carolina people.

I appreciate your efforts, Erica. That snipped source does not specify that Peter Pinnell was the sib if "William Pinnell, Jr." who allegedly moved to NC in 1698, does it?

There is a deed of sale in 1767 Charleston, South Carolina, by a William Pinnell who sold all of his worldly goods for $1,000 to a Wm. Hill.

In 1767, Peter Pinnell would have been about 12 years old.

"son" (not sib).

And that’s as much as I know.

https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/p/i/n/Donald-M-Pinnell/index.html

The earliest records we have found of my ggg grandfather, Jonathan PINNELL and his wife, Jemima (surname unknown),are from Union County, SC, about 1783.Census records for 1800 and later indicate that he was born about 1755-1758.In 1800, Jonathan's land was adjacent to or near those of Peter and Burrel PINNEL and Lewis PENNIL.We believe these four were brothers or otherwise closely related.Census, Deed and Court records show that Jonathan and his family owned property in Union, Craven, Spartanburg and Greenville Counties, SC by 1800.For reasons unknown, over the years, members of the family often used the surnames PINION, PINNION, or PENYON, as well asseveral variations in thespelling of PINNELL.We have many documents to support this fact, including several which use different names for the same person within a single document.By 1810, Peter and his wife, Ann Yarbrough (Nancy Yarber) had emigrated to Kentucky and thence to Misssouri.By 1820, Jonathan and his second wife, Rebecca GARRARD, were living in Hall County, GA, where Jonathan died in late 1831.Jonathan's youngest son, Richard, in 1850, is resident in DeKalb County, GA, using the name PENION.I would be most interested in any information relating to the ancestry of Jonathan and his line, and I will gladly share the information I have. There is a widely accepted school of thought that Peter was the son of William and Sarah (BAGLY) PANNELL, and any authoritative evidence supportingthis contention would be greatly appreciated. I am currently researching the surnames PINNELL (in all it's variations), GARRARD, STONE, WILBOURN, EVINES, MCCRARY, BONE and FRANKLIN.My wife's family lines include the surnames AYE, DELONG, ROHMAN, and FOSTER in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.

In Greenville District, SC, an 1805 deed witnessed by Peter Pinnell involving Jonathan Pinnell with his wife Rebecca who sold 150 acres to Turner Pinnell.

I'm not arguing against "Pinion" and a host of different spellings or variations. I'm just going on what I'm finding on legal documents.

In 1808 Rebecca Pinnell (presumably wife of Jonathan Pinnell) is shown as the sister of Matthew Myrick.

In this document she appointed her son-in-law to act as her power of attorney in the settlement of the estate of her brother who died intestate.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C34D-4SJT-1?view=f...

Circling back to this 1805 Greenville deed, it actually names both Sr. and Jr. "Peter Pinnell".

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS7S-99RB-9?view=f...

Forgot to mention Rebecca (Myrick) Pinnell's son-in-law was Elijah Bennett of the same location.

Peter Pinnell and wife, Ann ("Anny") on an 1807 deed in Greenville District, SC.
