About Agnes Stewart, Countess of Bothwell
LADY AGNES STEWART
Lady Agnes Stewart was also known as Isabella Stewart. She and James IV Stewart, King of Scotland were associated before 1511.
Agnes Stewart was born as the 'bastard-natural' of James Stewart, earl of Buchan by Margaret, widow of William Murray. She became mistress of James IV, king of Scots, and bore him a daughter. However, soon after 28 August 1511 she married Adam Hepburn, earl of Bothwell, and bore him a son. Just two years later, on 9 September 1513, both her husband and King James IV fell at the battle of Flodden.

Although he had a wife and children, Hearty James Stewart, Earl of Buchan, inherited the Beaufort libido. He had a mistress, Mrs. Margaret Murray, by whom he had two children – James Stewart, 1st Laird of Traquair and Agnes Stewart who continued in the tradition of her mother. Charles Stuart-Menteth was descended from the son whose descendants were fairly quiet and well behaved, but Ludivina was descended from the wild daughter, Agnes Stewart.
"Lady Agnes Stewart was born illegitimately. She was the daughter of James Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan and Margaret (?). From 3 June 1514, her married name became Home. From between 1520 and 15 November 1525, her married name became Maxwell. From before 13 December 1549, her married name became Ramsay. On 31 October 1552 she was legitimised under the Great Seal."
