About Colonel Henry Browne, of "Four Mile Tree"

Birth place also reported as Surrey, England.

"a Member of the Council, Henry Browne had been one of the original attendees at the Meeting of the Assembly on 20 February 1636/7, which established the post of Customs Officer in Virginia. He was in Virginia by 1634, and died in 1662."

"[Henry and Anne Browne had a son, Barclay Browne, who seems to have died without issue; and a daughter and eventual heiress, Mary Browne. Mary Browne married a William Browne, who was clearly a relation. He had come to Virginia in 1637 as a Headright of Thomas Gray, who patented 100 acres in James City County in 1643 on the east side of Gray's Creek, adjoining his own land, for the transportation of two persons: George Graves and William Browne]."

Date of birth is not clear. Interestingly Henry Browne's name does not appear on this list of citizens. There are three William Brownes: one killed in the massacre; and one aged 26 who came over on the Providence in 1622; and one aged 14 who came over on Sir John's ship, the Southhampton, in 1622. Ref. "Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia 1607-1624/5," 3d ed. 1987, pub. Order of First Families of Virginia.

"Colonel Henry Browne, of "Four Mile Tree," was a member of the council from 1634 to 1660. He was born in England and died in Virginia. He was great friend of Sir John Harvey: and Kempe, the Secretary of State, says that there were only two other members of the council who suppoted Harvey-Purefoy and another (Browne), "who was an honest, plain man, but of small capacity and less power." He married Anne, probably the daughter of Francis Fowler, of Virginia (aged 23 in 1625), as in 1639 he patented 2,250 acres in Surry County at Jouring Point Creek (adjoining the plantation seated by Mr. Fowler), which was originally granted to Mr. Francis Fowler, and was left by Mrs. Antonia Fowler to the said Henry Brown. On March 1, 1657, Col. Henry Browne and Anne, his wife, sold land comprenended in a patent of a greater quantity situated in Surry County on James River, beginning at the westermost end of Pipsico Plantation,&c., and so upward to the line of Colonel John Flood. Witnesses William Browne, Thomas Flood. He was a vestryman of Southwark Parish, May 24, 1661, and died soon after. There is on record in Surry a bond from Col. Thomas Swann to Berkeley Browne, son of Col. Henry Browne, Esq., deceased, dated 20 October, 1662, the condition being that as Col. Tomas Swann shall shortly marry Mrs. Ann Browne, relict of Col. Henry Browne, if he gives Berkeley several articles of personalty, bond to be void.

Issue to Col. Henry Browne and Anne, his wife: (2) Berkeley Browne, who appears to have died without issue, (3) Mary Browne."
