"Franz Michael Kilian, van Stettin in Duitsland, het in 1763 as soldaat met die skip Westerveld in Suid-Afrika aangekom. Voordat hy in 1768 burgerskap ontvang het, was hy vir vyf jaar as grofsmid werksaam. Sy huwelik met Florentina Moses is met tien kinders geseen.
