About Harper Lee

Harper Lee was an American author known for her 1961 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, which deals with the issues of racism that were observed by the author as a child in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. Despite being Lee's only published book for most of her life, until the surprise 2015 publication of Go Set a Watchman, it led to her being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contribution to literature. Lee was also the recipient of numerous honorary degrees, for which she always declined to make a speech.

"The Scottsboro Case" was a series of notorious trials during the 1930's and has been credited with being the inspiration for Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird". The trials were prosecuted by Alabama Attorney General and Lt. Governor Thomas Edmund Knight, Jr. Lt. Gov. Thomas Edmund Knight, Jr.

Other significant contributions included assisting her close friend Truman Capote in his research for the book In Cold Blood.
