Biography

Jane married David Stuart, a descendant of the royal house of Stewart, through his mother Lucy Erskine, daughter of David Erskine, Lord Dun.
Jane and David had five children christened in the church by their father.
From the Parish records, which he himself kept, we find the recordings of the births of all children born in the Parish, including those of him and his wife Jane: [1]
Jane died on 14 January 1749/50 in Stafford County, now King George County, Virginia [2]
One source says that Jane was the daughter of Sir John Gibbons, the Governor of Barbados. [1] However John Gibbons was born in 1717. No Gibbons was ever a governor of Barbados.[3] There was a William Gibbons who was a speaker for the House of Assembly of Barbados.
Rev David Stuart, born late in the 17th century (about 1691) at Inverness, Scotland, was a descendant of the royal house of Stuart, according to the Colonial Families of the Southern States of America. His mother was Lucy Erskine, daughter of David Erskine, Lord Dunn.
He served under his kinsman, James Stuart VIII, the "old pretender", in the uprising of 1715, and in consequence fled from Scotland to Virginia
He married Jane Gibbons, daughter of Sir John Gibbons, governor of Barbados. He went to England for holy orders, returning to Virginia and settling on the banks of the Potomac. Soon after he was chosen rector of St. Paul's parish, Stafford (later King George] county. He was one of the most noted divines of the colonial church, serving as rector of St. Paul's until his death in 1749.
He was succeeded by his son, Rev. William Stuart. Rev. William Stuart was sent to England by his father, Rev. David Stuart, to be educated. He studied theology in London and was ordained an Episcopal minister by Bishop Edmonds in 1745. On his return to the colony he acted as his father's assistant for some years, and finally succeeded him as rector. The present St. Paul's church was built for him on the site of the old frame church.
