About Major Walter Weinberg, MC
Military Cross – 1st Class
Mr Walter Weinberg, who has died in Bournemouth, aged 67, had a distinguished military career. He served in the Grenadier Guards and later in the King's Shropshire Light Infantry. He landed with his company on the Normandy beaches and fought under General Montgomery through the break-out into Belgium and beyond.
As the war drew to a close, Major Weinberg was training Jewish Brigade troops, subsequently part of Palmach, the elite troops of the Hagana, Israel's defence force, to withstand Arab attacks.
After leaving the British Army, he was recommissioned in the Royal Air Force serving overseas in the RAF Catering Corps. From the catering skill thus acquired, he ran top-class hotels in Jersey and the Midlands. He had previously been catering manager at Pinewood Studios and later took over the main catering post at the Junior Carlton Club.
