27 January 1405: Charter by King Robert III. to James Kennedy and Mary Stewart his wife (daughter of the King) in liferent, and the heirs male procreate between them, whom failling Alexander, Hugh, John, Thomas and David Kennedies, brothers of the said James Kennedy, and the heirs male of their bodies respectively, whom failling the nearest heirs whatsoever of Sir Gilbert Kennedy, Knight, of the Barony of Dalrymple lying in Kyle-regis; proceeding on the resignation of the said Sir Gilbert Kennedy; To be holden of the King and his successors for services used and wont. In 1390 Archibald Douglas, 4th Earl of Douglas, married Lady Margaret (d.1451), eldest daughter of John Stewart, Earl of Carrick, who later became King Robert III. Of their children:

   * Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Douglas, and Wigton, &c., (1390–1439), who succeeded to the earldom.

* Elizabeth (d. c. 1451), who married first John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Buchan, secondly Thomas Mar, son of Alexander Stewart, Earl of Mar, and thirdly William Sinclair, 3rd Earl of Orkney (d. 1480).

Lady Mary Stewart was the daughter of Robert III Stewart, King of Scotland and Annabel Drummond.

She married by contract, firstly, George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus, son of William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas and Margaret Stewart, Countess of Angus, on 24 May 1397.1

She married, secondly, Sir James Kennedy of Dunure, younger, son of Sir Gilbert Kennedy of Dunure, circa 1404.1 She and Sir William Cunningham were engaged in July 1409.1 S

he married, thirdly, Sir William Graham on 13 November 1413.1

She married, fourthly, Sir William Edmondstone of Culloden, son of Sir Archibald Edmonstone, in 1425.3 She died circa 1458.3 She was buried at Strathbane Church, Scotland.3

    Lady Mary Stewart gained the title of Princess Mary of Scotland.4 As a result of her marriage, Lady Mary Stewart was styled as Countess of Angus after 24 May 1397. From after 24 May 1397, her married name became Douglas. From circa 1404, her married name became Kennedy. From 13 November 1413, her married name became Graham. From 1425, her married name became Edmonstone.
