My father, Dennis Topper, was born in Maroon Town, Jamaica, West Indies, in 1928. His father, Hubert Topper, was one of 5 children -- the other four were named Eustace, Liza, William and Louise. When my father, Dennis Topper, was a young boy in Jamaica, he sat on his own grandfather Topper's knee and was told his grandfather's grandfather was born in Germany. Perhaps at that time, when they still lived in Germany, Topper was spelled Topfer. History shows that in the 1830's there were significant numbers of European immigrants to Jamaica from Germany, Scotland, England and Ireland.
My Uncle Eddy (Edward) Topper was a taxi driver in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Uncle Eddy told a story of picking up a passenger one day that told him of an English sea captain named Topper. My Uncle thought that sea captain could have been one of our ancestors. I think the story my great grandfather told my father on his knee is likely the more accurate one as far as my bloodline is concerned.
